The first Apple store to sit directly on the water

Apple’s first-ever floating store opened on Thursday, September 10 in Singapore. The dome-like structure that’s located at Marina Bay Sands is made out of 114 pieces of glass held together by 10 narrow vertical mullions. It features a 360-degree view of the sovereign island city-state of Singapore and allows for tons of natural daylight to enter the store.

This will be the first of Apple’s locations to include an underwater boardroom, located on the store’s lower level, where developers and entrepreneurs alike can conduct meetings with Apple team members. The construction of Apple Marina Bay Sands was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, a former temple that currently serves as a Catholic church.

“We couldn’t be more excited to open the breath-taking Apple Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, building on our commitment to this special place that began more than 40 years ago,” Apple’s retail chief Deirdre O’Brien said in a press release on Monday. “Our passionate and talented team is ready to welcome this community to our new store and deliver the care and support that our customers around the world love.”

This brand-new store will be Apple’s third retail facility located in Singapore, a hub of world travel and business. As such, this location will feature a diverse set of employees, as the staff of nearly 150 people speak 23 languages.
